Fasting

We do not recommend prolonged fasting

After 36 hours of fasting, the body begins to breakdown its own proteins releasing amino acids. So this is not a good strategy for depleting methionine and cysteine.

Do not fast if you are underweight

Cancer patients who are underweight should never fast as excessive weight loss can be very detrimental.  One should achieve normal healthy weight prior to embarking on a methionine and cysteine restricted diet.

Rather than fasting, eat an abundance of fruit

Fruits contain very little methionine and cysteine. Fruits sustain energy and are full of cancer fighting phytochemicals. It is difficult to obtain sufficient calories eating fruit only so adding starchy vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes and hard winter squashes are helpful.
